Biomat, and Why It Is Not Dirt
A dark slimy layer grows on the trench bottom and sidewalls where effluent meets soil. That layer is bacteria, and a thin one is doing its job. It slows the water and treats it. A thick one seals the surface. Once sealed, the trench stops accepting water. The water still arrives every time somebody flushes, so it goes up and out instead of down.
The Pumping That Did Not Hold
Nearly everyone who reaches us has already paid a pump truck once. The tank came empty, the house drained fine for a few weeks, and then the backup came back. That is not a tank problem. An empty tank buys room. It does not change one thing about the ground the field sits in. Call a pump truck for a routine tank cleanout. Call us when the yard is wet.
Hydraulic Overload
A field sized for three bedrooms gets six people, laundry every day, and a toilet running all night that nobody hears. Add a sump pump discharging onto the trenches and a downspout doing the same. What are the signs of a failing drain field?
Look outside first. Soggy ground or standing water over the trenches, a stripe of grass greener and taller than the rest of the lawn, and a smell in the yard. Inside you get slow drains through the whole house, gurgling, a backup at the lowest drain, and the tank alarm. Indoor trouble with dry ground outside and no alarm usually points at a clog inside the house instead.

Why do so many Duluth area sites end up on a mound?
Bedrock. This corner of the state sits on the Canadian Shield, and the soil over that rock is thin. The water table is high near Lake Superior and near the inland lakes. Do you dig in the winter?
No, and we will not promise one. Frost drives deep in St. Louis County, deeper than almost anywhere else in the state. Frozen ground stops excavation, and a mound needs workable material to build with. Winter here is evaluation season where the ground allows it, plus drawings, permits, and a spot on the spring schedule. Saturated spring ground moves a start date too.
My cabin sits empty most of the year. Why did the system freeze?
A lightly used system freezes more readily than a full time one. Warm water moving through pipe every day is what keeps a shallow run open through a Northland winter. A cabin that sees nobody from November to April sends nothing through, so the line and sometimes the tank can freeze. Cover depth, slope, and insulation over the shallow sections are what we look at.
Do you pump septic tanks?
Not as a service. We dig, and a pump truck pumps, so call a septic pumping company for a routine cleanout. We do pump a tank down when we are about to lift it out of the ground or abandon it, because it has to be empty first. If your field has failed, getting the tank pumped buys some room while the permit runs. It is not the fix.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Minnesota licenses the businesses and certifies the individuals who design, install, and inspect these systems, and we carry that credential plus liability insurance. An older system installed before the current rules handles the empty months fine and then meets a load it was never sized for.
